A group of us who were writing up our dissertations were tracking our writing behavior and collected data, set schedules, reinforcement contingencies when we met goal, etc. We presented that paper at a conference.

Tracking your writing - either time spent on active writing (includes planning, draft, revising) and/or number of words written is an effective way to stick with it to meet your writing goals.
