Big hugs, G. I can feel every ounce of your pain, longing, and resilience more than you can imagine. Your children ask the same questions I asked and I received the same answers. It was difficult when my father's colleagues made different choices for the family. Your children are young and I sincerely hope as they get older they will see more of their father and come to appreciate the choices he made was for their future.
