I am so sorry for your troubles. I left my handbag with all our passports one time when I was flustered with two small kids, but luckily the bag was still there when I left my kids with strangers to go find the bag. It happens to the best of us in stressful moments. These days when I lose things, I take a deep breath and tell myself everything is replaceable.
