I can feel you at so many levels as I can see the axe coming down on the school of education in my private university where tuition costs don't justify the remuneration of a teacher. We have been barely hanging by a thread for many years now.

However, my understanding is that the "tenure" is not attached to a department but it the university or that is what I was told. Not to say that I could find courses to teach in other departments, but given that I have close to 20 years to possible retirement, I will have to find another position soon.

I am sorry that you are in this position. I hope you find this as an opportunity to pursue other interests that you held on to for post-retirement. Easier said than done, I know.
