I don't believe I'd read a better piece distinguishing a journal from an essay. I do both and unbeknownst to me, I was doing exactly this: keeping the most private parts of my life to myself until I was ready to share it in an essay a few years later. I am enjoying learning the craft of writing better essays to draw the reader into my experience.
