I started to read this when I woke up at 3am to go to the bathroom and stopped as I wanted to go back to sleep. LOL! I finished it this morning. I have been woken up from some bad dreams or scary dreams but none like you describe. My heart would race and I would even break out into a sweat.
Praying, meditating, or thinking good thoughts with some soothing music before sleeping may help.
