In a patriarchal society, the man assumes the role of the provider and caregiver, the breadwinner. In the end, it is a choice they make. I always wanted a more present partner and parent, but I too raised my kids alone. My children may make the observation that their father wasn't present for all their milestone events, but I don't think there is regret from the father for missing out. Their worth as a parent is measured by the privileges their children could afford as a result of their hardwork. I've seen men who choose to be more present and make decisions to be more present and involved with their kids.
