It’s called a Saree!
Cultural awareness is a prerequisite for cultural sensitivity
When I first landed in the United States as a graduate student in the late 90s and wanted to wear an Indian outfit, my brother told me that people in America do not welcome public displays of culture.
That thought stayed with me as I chose when and where I wore my Indian clothes. It was mainly for an Indian event or ceremony, in a predominantly Indian crowd.
The Saree (or Sari)
One of the pieces of clothing worn by women in India is a saree. It is an unstitched piece of woven fabric that is 6–9 yards long. This fabric is draped in several different ways in different regions of India.
The saree is typically worn with a bodice or a blouse and an in-skirt or petticoat that helps hold it in place around the waist.
In my opinion, the saree is the most elegant type of Indian clothing there is. I used to love wearing the saree for special occasions. Just like kids have designated pajama days in school, we used to have set days to coordinate and wear a saree to college.
