It’s very cultural and I believe it has to do with hygiene and cleanliness. It’s also a sign of respect to take your shoes off when entering religious places in India.

I loved it when I would remove my shoes when entering a house in Japan, and when it was time to leave the shoes would magically make a 180 degree turn and face the door!! :)
