I've lived in the Midwest and in the north east that is far more liberal. I experienced microaggressions but nothing as serious as you describe. In fact, I've witnessed those episodes while traveling in London. But you are right, there was always an undertone of racism that has now risen to the surface and given more power by the morphed political party.
