As a story nerd, I think you did such a great job of reflecting on the fond memories of your father, after admitting to the fact that you could have done a better job all along. You used one sentence that he said and made it so relatable to your 12-yr old self, but also to the reader. I can't think of anything else to improve. I'll have to save my piece about my father when we get closer to father's day or maybe will get going on that sooner.
