This is great read, Diane! I grew up in India with the same collectivistic culture and many things you mention hold true to the way I grew up. It is a close knit community and I am sure you had your struggles as a gaijin. Thanks for sharing this piece. I will have to watch the Netflix show when I'm back from my trip.
