I had a similar experience. Not so much dysfunctional, but my family did not have the social culture of celebrating and having fun. They were more conservative. That’s why I took very well to my in-laws and the big family who liked to eat and have fun. However, after being unhappy in my marriage, when I initiated the divorce….all of that family disappeared. ☹️
